The Kaesong Folk Hotel is a traditional Korean-style accommodation arranged around small courtyards with rooms facing inward, built using traditional wood construction methods. A small stream runs through the grounds with tiny bridges connecting different areas, and the layout includes gardens and pathways with an orderly structure.
The hotel opened in 1989 and was designed in the traditional Korean wooden house style known as Hanok. It sits at the edge of Kaesong's old town, a city that remained largely undamaged during the war and preserved many buildings from earlier eras.
The name reflects Korean folk traditions visible in the architecture and daily routines here. Visitors experience these customs firsthand through activities like making rice cakes and listening to staff sing traditional songs, connecting them to local ways of life.
Rooms are simple with floor mats for sleeping and traditional underfloor heating, but no hot water in individual rooms. Power outages may occur, so visitors should charge devices beforehand and prepare for basic facilities.
Courtyard No. 10 is a VIP section with newer furnishings and hot water available all day, setting it apart from the other spartan rooms. This room was specially designed with considerable effort to offer higher comfort to high-ranking guests.
