Wonhyo Bridge, Road bridge across Han River in Seoul, South Korea.
Wonhyo Bridge is a road bridge spanning the Han River that connects Yongsan District to Yeongdeungpo District. The roughly 1.5 kilometer (1,470 meter) structure handles heavy traffic as a major transportation corridor in Seoul.
Construction began in 1978 and the bridge opened to traffic in 1981, making it the thirteenth crossing over the Han River. The structure initially charged a toll but became free in 1983 when a company donated it to Seoul.
The bridge carries the name of a respected Buddhist monk from Korean history, showing how infrastructure projects honor cultural traditions. The structure serves as a daily route for thousands of residents crossing between districts.
The bridge is open to vehicle traffic around the clock with no tolls required. Multiple lanes accommodate heavy traffic during peak hours, especially during morning and evening commutes.
The bridge was featured in the 2006 South Korean film 'The Host' directed by Bong Joon-ho. It appeared in a memorable fight scene that used the bridge's architecture as part of the action.
