National Assembly Building, Parliament building in Yeouido, South Korea
The National Assembly Building is a stone parliament structure in Yeouido with seven floors above ground and one basement level. The plenary chamber interior holds three hundred lawmakers with additional seating in upper galleries.
The structure was completed in 1975 to replace the colonial-era Bumingwan in central Seoul. Eight presidential inaugurations have taken place here from Roh Tae-woo through Yoon Suk-yeol.
The twenty-four columns along the outer facade represent ongoing dialogue between elected representatives and the public. Visitors can see this architectural statement when walking around the exterior.
Visitors must book guided tours in advance to enter the library and plenary chamber. The visitor center provides general information and helps with navigation inside the building.
The chamber contains more seats than currently needed to accommodate future additional representatives. This reserve capacity was built with potential reunification with the North in mind.
