Karakhan Mausoleum, Medieval mausoleum in Taraz, Kazakhstan.
The Karakhan Mausoleum is a brick and stone burial monument in Taraz, Kazakhstan, displaying elements of Islamic architecture. Its exterior walls carry stonework that spreads across the entire facade.
Construction took place in the year 1100 and served as a resting place for an influential leader. The Karakhanids ruled over large parts of the region at that time and shaped its cultural development.
The site takes its name from a ruler of the Karakhanids, whose realm covered large parts of Central Asia. Visitors can see cloth-covered surfaces inside, a practice that remains common at Islamic burial sites to this day.
The monument stands in a wooded park on Ybyraev Street and can be entered by visitors. The surroundings offer shade and resting spots for breaks between sightseeing.
The inscriptions and patterns in the stone facade show the skills of craftsmen from the 11th century. Some of the carvings contain religious texts and geometric shapes that span multiple levels.
