Babazhi Khatun Mausoleum, Medieval mausoleum in Aisha Bibi, Kazakhstan.
Babazhi Khatun Mausoleum is a medieval brick tomb in Jambyl Province, Kazakhstan, standing a few steps from the Aisha Bibi Mausoleum. The structure shows an umbrella-shaped ribbed dome resting on a square base.
Construction took place between the 11th and 12th centuries as a burial site for Babaji Khatun, who according to tradition protected the nearby monument. The tomb survived through the centuries as a place of remembrance for this protector figure.
The name refers to a guardian figure who watched over the neighboring tomb, reflecting medieval reverence for this female protector. Visitors today see a simple brick structure whose execution shows the craft skills of nomadic builders.
The tomb lies near Taraz city and remains accessible to visitors throughout the year. A visit takes about an hour and combines well with the adjacent monument.
The ribbed dome construction uses a rare brick technique where individual elements interlock without wooden supports. This building method appears at only a few other sites in the region and shows the high skill of medieval craftsmen.
