Tansen

Tansen sits at 1350 meters on the Mahabharat Range and is defined by narrow, steep lanes with Newari-style buildings and temples scattered throughout. The town overlooks the Kaligandaki River valley below.

The settlement became the capital of the Magar Kingdom in the 16th century under the rule of Mukunda Sen. During this era, the kingdom pursued ambitious territorial expansion, coming close to controlling Kathmandu itself.

Skilled metalworkers and weavers practice their craft in workshops throughout the town, creating intricate pieces that reflect generations of local knowledge. These trades remain central to how residents earn their living and shape the community's identity.

Visitors can reach the town via the Siddharth Highway, which connects to Kathmandu and Pokhara. The steep streets and narrow lanes require sturdy footwear and time to navigate comfortably.

A hospital founded in 1954 treats over 100,000 patients annually and operates a nursing school alongside its medical services. This facility has become a major healthcare resource for the surrounding region and beyond.
