Attock Bridge

Attock Bridge, Railway bridge in Attock District, Pakistan

Description

Attock Bridge spans 425 meters across the Indus River, connecting Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces with five steel truss sections on two vertical levels. The upper level accommodates railway traffic while the lower level was originally designed for vehicular use.

History

The bridge opened in 1883 following a design by Sir Guildford Molesworth. It underwent major reconstruction in 1929 under Sir Francis Callaghan's supervision.

Culture

The fortified entrances at both ends reflect security concerns of the colonial era. These defensive features show how infrastructure was designed to address regional challenges of that period.

Practical

The bridge is accessible on foot, allowing visitors to enjoy views from above and observe the structure's engineering. The best access is from nearby roads on either side of the Indus.

Did you know?

The bridge's longest spans were built using steel girders that were exceptional for their era. These sections showcase innovative construction techniques from the colonial period.
