Astore is a mountain district in Gilgit Division that covers approximately 5,000 square kilometers and sits at an elevation of around 2,600 meters. The terrain is characterized by steep peaks and contains large areas of glaciers that shape the landscape.
The region came under the control of Persian adventurer Ghazi Mukhpun in the 17th century after he married into the Skardu royal family. This union established dynastic rule that influenced the area's political development for centuries.
The local population speaks Shina and follows traditions shaped by Kashmiri, Dardic, and Islamic influences that have been passed down through generations. These customs remain visible in daily life and social practices throughout the region.
Access is possible via two routes: from Skardu through Deosai Plateau or from Gilgit via Jaglot, with the Jaglot route remaining open year-round. The best time to visit depends on your chosen route, as snow at higher elevations can affect accessibility during winter months.
The name comes from the Sanskrit word Astara, which referred to an ancient horse breeding ground that gave the area its identity. This historical connection remains part of the region's heritage and character today.
