Shigar Fort, Royal fort in Shigar, Pakistan
Shigar Fort is a fortress built on a large boulder at the entrance of Baltoro Glacier, displaying traditional architectural elements across multiple levels. The restored structures include various chambers and gardens within the compound.
The fortress was built in 1650 by the Raja of the Amacha Dynasty as a fortified residence, replacing an earlier structure called Khar-i-Dong that had been destroyed during Mughal invasions.
The structure blends Balti architectural traditions with Tibetan and Mughal influences, with a square-shaped Baradari pavilion in the eastern garden reflecting local building practices.
The site now functions as a museum hotel under Serena management located about 30 kilometers from Skardu. Access is convenient from the main trekking routes heading toward Baltoro Glacier and K2.
The Aga Khan Cultural Service invested significantly in restoration work that transformed the palace into a preservation model recognized internationally. This restoration earned global acknowledgment for its exemplary execution of heritage conservation.
