Khaplu Palace, Palace and hotel in Khaplu, Pakistan.
Khaplu Palace is a four-story residence in Khaplu, Pakistan, that now serves as both a historic monument and accommodation. The structure combines local building materials with regional decorative techniques, showing different room sizes and functions on each floor.
The local Raja commissioned the construction of this residence in 1840 as a center for administering his territory in Gilgit-Baltistan. The building remained the seat of the royal family until the mid-20th century, before it was later closed and stood empty for several decades.
Visitors can observe traditional Balti craftsmanship in the restored halls, where carved wooden panels and handwoven textiles from the region line the walls. The large courtyard with its stone arches once served as a gathering place for official ceremonies and is now used by guests for quiet walks.
The accommodation is open during the warmer months when the mountain roads from Skardu are passable. Visitors should plan a day trip to tour the different rooms and walk through the surrounding gardens.
The restoration process took five years and involved local craftspeople using traditional techniques to recreate the original wood carvings and stonework. Many of the furnishings were reproduced from old pieces found in surrounding villages.
