Chumik Glacier, Glacial formation in Siachen region, India.
Chumik Glacier is a glacial formation in the Karakoram range within the Siachen region, extending over several kilometers as an offshoot of the Bilafond Glacier on the Saltoro Ridge. The ice mass sits at extremely high altitude and shapes the landscape of this remote mountain area.
The glacier lies within a region that became a site of military operations in the second half of the 20th century. Political and territorial tensions have shaped the area through recent decades.
The glacier holds different names across languages, with Hindi speakers referring to it as चुमिक हिमानी and Bengali speakers as চুমিক হিমবাহ.
Access is severely limited since the glacier sits in a military restricted zone at very high altitude, requiring special permits before any visit is possible. Only a small number of people can reach this location, and any journey demands extensive preparation and specialized gear.
Here, the boundary lines between military installations and natural landmarks merge, with outposts such as Sher Post positioned at strategic high points on the ice. This blend of nature and military geography creates a place unlike any other in its significance.
