Deosai National Park, National Park in Skardu District, Pakistan
Deosai National Park is a protected area in Skardu District that covers a high plateau sitting at around 4,100 meters (13,450 feet) above sea level. Grassland alternates with ridges and several lakes, while the terrain is enclosed by peaks on all sides.
The Pakistani government created the protected area in 1993 to secure habitat for the Himalayan brown bear. The measure followed years of hunting that had reduced the population sharply.
The name comes from Persian words meaning 'Land of Giants,' a reference to how local Balti communities have long viewed this enormous high plain.
The plateau is accessible only in summer between June and September, when snow no longer blocks the passes. Visitors should bring warm clothing, as temperature can shift sharply even during this season.
This section of the Karakoram forms the second highest plateau on Earth after Tibet. In summer, wildflowers cover the meadows while snow leopards hunt in the adjacent rocky zones.
