Olszynka, Administrative district in Gdańsk, Poland
Olszynka is a district in the southeastern part of Gdańsk, set on flat, low-lying ground crossed by drainage ditches. It combines residential areas with industrial facilities, including a freight railway station that connects to the North Port.
In the 14th century, under Teutonic rule, the area was founded as a settlement called Walddorf and served as a forest reserve for the growing city of Gdańsk. Over the following centuries it gradually shifted into the mixed residential and industrial area it is today.
The allotment gardens scattered across Olszynka are a natural part of daily life here, used by locals to grow vegetables and spend time outdoors. The brick houses built for railway workers give the neighborhood a down-to-earth, working-class character that is still visible today.
The district is reachable from central Gdańsk by bus, making it easy to get to without a car. The terrain is flat but low-lying, so sturdy footwear is a good idea if you plan to walk around, especially after rain.
The Olszynski Manor, built in 1802, was saved from neglect by a local congregation and converted into a Christian center. It stands as one of the very few historic buildings in the district to have found a new purpose.
