Belgrade Zoo

Belgrade Zoo, Zoo in Mali Kalemegdan, Serbia

Belgrade Zoo sits within the Belgrade Fortress grounds and houses roughly 2,000 animals from about 200 different species in specially designed areas. Each section reflects the habitat needs of the animals living there.

This zoo opened in 1936 as part of Belgard's development. During World War II, bombing raids in 1941 and 1944 caused serious damage to buildings and led to loss of animals.

The zoo carries the name Garden of Good Hope, reflecting its commitment to animal protection and learning programs. You can see this mission reflected in how the grounds are organized and maintained for both animals and visitors.

The zoo is open daily and located right within the Belgrade Fortress area, making it easy to visit as part of a day out. You can spend as much time as you want moving through the different sections.

The zoo is home to Muja, an American alligator that arrived in 1937 and is recognized as the oldest living alligator in captivity worldwide. This remarkable resident draws attention from many visitors.
