The Neryungri coal deposit is located in the Aldano-Chulman region of the South Yakutian coal basin and contains around 20 seams, most of which are visible at ground level. The open-pit mining operation reaches depths of about 320 meters and uses specialized equipment designed for extreme temperature conditions.
Exploration of the area began in the 1950s when geological surveys confirmed the presence of significant coal reserves in the South Yakutian region. These early investigations laid the groundwork for industrial development that followed in the area.

The mining area is located in a remote and sparsely populated region with extreme climate and long, very cold winters. Visitors should expect difficult access roads and limited tourist facilities in the area.
The main seam, called Powerful, covers about 16 square kilometers and produces high-grade coking coal used in steel mills across Russia. This seam represents one of the most valuable coal resources in the southern Yakutia region.
