The mansion was constructed in 1889 and became a center of literary activities during the 1930s. Writer Alexey Gorky played a key role in its transfer to Soviet authorities.

The interior preserves original parquet floors, tiled stoves, and marble fireplaces that reflect the taste of the original owners. The fifteen paintings by artist J. Clover displayed in the upper lobby are part of this artistic collection.
