Foros Church, Orthodox church in Foros, Russia
The Resurrection Church stands on Red Rock cliff at 412 meters above sea level, overlooking the Black Sea coastline. The building sits in a dramatic location high above the surrounding landscape and offers expansive views from its position.
A Moscow tea merchant named Alexander Kuznetsov built the church in 1892 as a memorial to Emperor Alexander III's survival of a train accident. During the Soviet era it was repurposed for other uses before being restored to religious function in 1990.
The church blends Russian and Byzantine architectural forms in a distinctive way. Its central dome rests on columns rather than thick outer walls, creating a notably open interior feeling.
You can reach the site through the Old Sevastopol Highway, and entry is free. Parking spaces are limited during religious celebrations, so arriving early or using alternative transport is advisable.
During the Soviet period the building functioned as a restaurant, which was an unexpected transformation of the sacred space. This chapter left traces visible today in parts of the interior.
