Lund Municipality is an administrative area in Skåne County in southern Sweden, centered on a historic city with cobblestone streets and older brick buildings. The municipality covers the city itself as well as smaller villages and rural land in the surrounding area.
Lund was founded around 990 and quickly became one of the most important religious centers in medieval Scandinavia, with the cathedral built in the early 12th century. The city passed from Danish to Swedish rule in 1658, and the university followed eight years later as a symbol of the new order.
The name Lund comes from Old Norse and refers to a grove or wooded area. The university shapes how the city looks and feels today, with students filling the streets, cafés, and open squares around the campus throughout the year.
Cycling is by far the most common way to get around, and the city has well-marked paths that make it easy to reach most places without a car. For trips to the wider region, trains run regularly toward Malmö and Copenhagen.
The cathedral houses an astronomical clock from 1425 that still works, showing zodiac signs and moon phases on its face. Visitors who arrive at noon or 3 p.m. can watch a small mechanical show that plays automatically, which most people do not expect to find there.
