Haw Par Villa, Theme park in Queenstown, Singapore
Haw Par Villa is a theme park in Queenstown, Singapore, covering more than eight hectares and displaying over one thousand statues and dioramas drawn from Chinese mythology. The grounds are divided into open-air sections where visitors walk through scenes featuring deities, creatures and moral tales.
Two brothers from Rangoon opened this park in 1937 to share Chinese folklore and values with a wider public. After decades of decay, the site gained new museum facilities from 2015 and was restored for future generations.
The Ten Courts of Hell exhibition presents traditional Buddhist beliefs about punishment and judgment through detailed sculptural representations.
Entry is free Sunday through Thursday from 9 AM to 8 PM, while Friday and Saturday see gates open until 10 PM. The separate Hell's Museum charges its own admission and is not recommended for children under 13.
A dedicated museum inside the park explores concepts of death and the afterlife across several world religions and claims to be the first of its kind worldwide. Visitors can experience objects, installations and narratives from different faith traditions there.
