Sri Ruthra Kaliamman Temple, Hindu temple on Depot Road, Singapore
Sri Ruthra Kaliamman Temple is a Hindu temple on Depot Road in Singapore, with Goddess Kali as the main deity. The complex also includes shrines for Sri Vinayagar, Sri Subramaniar, and the Navagrahas, along with a four-story building used for community and educational activities.
The temple was founded in 1913 as a wooden shrine on the grounds of the Alexandra Brickworks. It moved to its current location on Depot Road in 1983, where it was later rebuilt in a more permanent form.
The temple follows South Indian Hindu traditions, which are visible in the colorful tower above the entrance and the sculpted figures on the facade. Inside, devotees bring offerings of flowers and coconuts, and the air carries the smell of incense and camphor throughout the day.
The temple opens early each morning, and visiting during prayer times gives a chance to observe traditional rituals. Modest clothing is expected, and shoes must be removed before entering, as is customary in Hindu temples.
In 1987, this temple was the first in Singapore to perform a Sakthi Sametha Navagrahas Kumbhabishegam ceremony. This ritual involves the consecration of the nine planetary deities together, which is rare even among Hindu temples in the region.
