Saint Joseph's Church

Saint Joseph's Church is a Gothic Revival structure in central Singapore with an octagonal belfry and blue-and-white ceramic tiles decorating its exterior. The interior is filled with light from large stained-glass windows that create a distinctive quality of illumination throughout the worship space.

Portuguese missionaries established the original structure in 1853, and the building was rebuilt in 1912 after the earlier church was demolished. This reconstruction marked a significant moment in the growth of Catholic life in Singapore's central area.

The church serves Singapore's Catholic community as a gathering place for worship and religious observance, particularly important to families with Portuguese and Spanish heritage. Regular masses and ceremonies continue to shape the daily rhythm of this place of worship.

Belgian artist Jules Dobbelaere designed and created the stained-glass windows found throughout the church, representing one of the largest collections of such work in Singapore. These imported glass artworks give the interior a rare artistic quality compared to other buildings in the city.
