UIC Building, Brutalist skyscraper in Downtown Core, Singapore
The UIC Building is an office tower in brutalist style in downtown Singapore that rises 152 meters with 40 floors of raw concrete facades and strong geometric forms. The massive concrete elements and characteristic surface structure make it a typical example of this architectural movement.
The structure was completed in 1973 and was briefly Singapore's tallest building, holding this position for just one year before being surpassed. Later it underwent updates until its demolition began in 2012.
The building represents a period of rapid architectural development in Singapore when Brutalist design shaped the urban landscape during the 1970s. Its raw concrete surfaces reflect the era's preference for functional, geometric forms.
The building is located in the Shenton Way business district and is easily reached by public transportation. Keep in mind it is no longer an active building, so visits are only possible from the outside.
The structure received a new concrete outer layer in 1986 that was specifically designed to enhance its brutalist features. This renovation work was significant because it deliberately emphasized the characteristic architectural elements rather than concealing them.
