Hougang, Residential town in North-East Region, Singapore.
Hougang is a planning area in north-east Singapore made up of ten subzones including Hougang East, Defu Industrial Park, Tai Seng, and Lorong Halus. The area spans a large piece of land with a mix of public housing blocks, commercial zones, and open spaces connected by roads and transport links.
The area changed from rural farmland and pig farms starting in 1977 when development began with the completion of Tampines Way. This transformation turned the countryside into a planned residential settlement over time.
The name comes from Hokkien language meaning 'after the river', reflecting how water and geography shaped this place and its people. Visitors can see this connection in the way neighborhoods grew along the waterways that still run through the area.
Hougang is reached through Hougang MRT station and Hougang Central Bus Interchange for easy movement around the area. The neighborhood has eight shopping centers including Hougang Mall and Hougang Green Shopping Mall where you can find daily needs and services.
Hougang Capeview became the first public housing project in Singapore to receive the CONQUAS Star certification in 2015 for building quality. This award highlights the careful attention paid to how the structures were built and finished.
