Matilda House, Heritage house in Punggol, Singapore.
Matilda House is a single-story tropical bungalow in Punggol with red roofs and white exterior walls within a condominium development called A Treasure Trove. Two large staircases lead to an entrance framed by slender columns and timber details.
Alexander Cashin built the house in 1902 and named it after his mother Josephine Matilda Cashin. After passing through different owners and decades of neglect, the bungalow was eventually preserved and restored.
The building served as a filming location for the BBC television series Tenko about women held captive during World War II. Residents of the housing estate now use its rooms for private gatherings and fitness activities.
The estate stands within a private condominium and now serves as a clubhouse with function rooms and exercise facilities for residents. Visitors can view the exterior from nearby paths, but access to the interior is limited to residents.
Local residents report that construction equipment repeatedly failed during attempted demolitions, ultimately leading to the preservation of the building. These stories helped shift opinion in favor of keeping the house standing.
