Bukit Merah

Bukit Merah is a planning area in Singapore's Central Region spanning about 14 square kilometers with eleven subzones including Alexandra, Bukit Ho Swee, and HarbourFront. The district blends residential buildings of various ages with shopping centers, traditional markets, and community spaces.

The name comes from the 14th century when red lateritic soil marked this location as a center for maritime trade. The area later developed into a modern residential district with a mix of older and newer housing estates built through the decades.

The neighborhood keeps Singapore's heritage alive through traditional markets and food centers where locals gather daily for meals. You notice older residential estates standing alongside newer buildings, showing how the area has evolved over generations.

Multiple MRT stations like Redhill and Tiong Bahru connect the area to the rest of Singapore, with buses running in all directions. The district has walkable spaces, with markets, parks, and shopping centers like VivoCity easily accessible on foot.

The Singapore General Hospital occupies a major section of the area and is one of the nation's oldest and largest medical centers. The hospital operates in the midst of residential neighborhoods and shops, making it a functioning part of daily life here.
