Yumurtatepe Tumulus

Yumurtatepe Tumulus, Archaeological mound in Yenimahalle, Turkey.

Yumurtatepe Tumulus is an earthen mound in Ankara Province that conceals ancient burial chambers and archaeological materials beneath its surface. The structure contains several underground spaces that have been partially explored through modern research methods.

Excavations in the 1980s uncovered archaeological materials dating to the Early Bronze Age. These findings show that the mound was built during an important period of early human settlement in the region.

The site reflects burial customs of ancient peoples, visible in how the mound is structured and organized. The circular chambers hidden below ground show how communities of that era honored their dead.

The mound is located in an accessible area of Ankara Province and can be visited during daylight hours. Wear sturdy shoes, as the terrain is uneven and some parts may be difficult to reach.

Research indicates this mound functioned as a strategic observation post rather than an ordinary settlement. The specialized arrangement of its underground structures reveals a purposeful design that went beyond simple burial practices.
