Europa Point Lighthouse, Historic lighthouse at Europa Point, Gibraltar.
Europa Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse in Gibraltar featuring a white cylindrical tower with a red horizontal band that rises 20 meters (66 feet) above the sea. The masonry structure emits a light visible up to 18 nautical miles to guide passing vessels.
Construction of this lighthouse began in 1838 under Governor Woodford's supervision and officially opened in August 1841. It was built to illuminate the strategic waterway of the Strait of Gibraltar.
The lighthouse has become a familiar landmark for people in Gibraltar and is managed by Trinity House. Visitors can easily recognize it as the sole British lighthouse structure located outside the United Kingdom.
The lighthouse stands at the southernmost point of Gibraltar and is accessible from several approaches. Wear sturdy footwear as the area is rocky and wind can be strong in this exposed location.
This lighthouse marks the meeting point where the Mediterranean Sea enters the Atlantic Ocean, making it a crucial navigation landmark. This geographic position places it at one of the world's busiest maritime routes.
