Europa Point Lighthouse, Historic lighthouse at Europa Point, Gibraltar.
Europa Point Lighthouse is a masonry lighthouse at the southernmost tip of Gibraltar, built as a white cylindrical tower marked by a red horizontal band around its middle. It stands about 20 meters (66 feet) tall and sits on a rocky headland where the strait narrows between two continents.
Work on the lighthouse started in 1838 under Governor Woodford and the structure opened in August 1841. It was built to help ships navigate the Strait of Gibraltar at a time when Britain controlled this passage and needed to protect its maritime routes.
The lighthouse at Europa Point is managed by Trinity House, the authority that normally oversees lighthouses within Britain itself. This makes it the only Trinity House lighthouse located outside British home waters, which gives it a special standing among sailors and visitors alike.
The lighthouse sits on open ground at the southern end of Gibraltar and can be reached on foot from several directions. The headland is exposed to wind, so it is worth bringing a layer even on warm days.
On a clear day, the Moroccan coast is visible from the base of the lighthouse, close enough to feel like another world just a short crossing away. Standing there, you can look west toward the Atlantic and east toward the Mediterranean at the same time, something few points on Earth allow.
