Harding's Battery, Artillery battery at Europa Point, Gibraltar
Harding's Battery is an artillery installation at Europa Point in Gibraltar with sunken magazines beneath the gun platform. The structure includes specialized chambers for ammunition storage and equipment maintenance that remain visible today.
The site was built in 1859 and received a large rifled muzzle-loading gun in 1878, replacing the original field pieces. This weapons change shows the rapid development of artillery technology in 19th century British military strategy.
The battery displays British military engineering from the Victorian era, with structures typical of coastal defenses from that time. Visitors can see in the underground areas how the magazines and ammunition chambers were arranged, reflecting the daily work of the artillerymen.
Access to the site is through the restored magazine area, which serves as an interpretation center with displays. Visitors can explore the underground structures and learn about the military history through the exhibits.
The current 45-ton gun on display combines parts from different sources and periods. The barrel originally came from another battery, while the carriage and platform were manufactured in 2013.
