South Downs National Park, National park and Dark Sky Reserve in South East England, United Kingdom.

South Downs National Park is a protected area in South East England that stretches across parts of Hampshire and Sussex, defined by chalk hills that reach the cliffs at Beachy Head. The landscape consists of open grazing lands, wooded valleys, and steep coastal sections that run roughly 100 miles (160 kilometers) from Winchester to Eastbourne.

Proposals for protected status date back to the 1940s when conservationists began advocating for the preservation of this range. After lengthy public hearings and political negotiations, the area was formally designated a national park in 2011.

The name refers to the gentle chalk ridges that have shaped sheep grazing and small villages for centuries. Hikers today still follow old field paths that farmers and merchants once used between settlements.

A network of marked routes lets visitors explore the landscape on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback. Paths cross open terrain, so sturdy footwear and weather-resistant clothing are advisable, especially during windy or rainy conditions.

Recognition as an International Dark Sky Reserve allows visitors to observe the night sky with exceptional clarity. Far from urban light sources, constellations and the Milky Way become visible to the naked eye.
