East Tennessee State University, Public university in Johnson City, Tennessee, United States
East Tennessee State University is a public research university in Johnson City, Tennessee. The campus spreads over rolling hills with red brick buildings, student dormitories, sports facilities, and open lawns crossed by walkways.
The institution opened in 1911 as a teacher training school with 29 students and grew into a full university over the following decades. Medical and health science programs were added starting in the 1970s and now form some of the largest departments.
The institution takes its name from the mountain region in the eastern part of the state and sits in an area with deep musical traditions. Every fall, students and visitors gather for Homecoming, when marching bands cross the campus and sports fans cheer for the football team.
The campus is large, so comfortable shoes are recommended for walking tours, especially when visiting multiple buildings. Public areas such as the library and amphitheater are typically open to visitors, but checking ahead for events is advisable.
The Quillen Bell Tower, the tallest structure on campus, chimes every hour and plays melodies on special occasions. The institution also operates its own radio station, WETS-FM, broadcasting classical music and news heard throughout the region.
