Shockwave, Steel stand-up roller coaster at Kings Dominion, Virginia
Shockwave is a steel coaster where riders stand throughout the journey, located at Kings Dominion amusement park in Virginia. The track winds through a vertical loop and reaches speeds of 50 mph (80 km/h) over a length of 2,231 feet (680 meters).
Japanese manufacturer Togo built this installation in 1986 as one of the first stand-up coasters on the North American continent. It remained in operation until 2015, when it was retired from service.
The ride name refers to the powerful sensation riders feel during steep upward turns and downward acceleration. Visitors often remember the unusual standing position maintained throughout the entire journey, which has become rare among modern coasters.
Each train holds 24 people, with two trains running at once to reduce waiting times. Riders should expect to stand upright throughout the entire ride, which offers a different physical experience than traditional coasters.
The station features a tilting floor that gently lifts trains after loading and sets them in motion without additional propulsion. This technical detail allows a smooth launch and reduces mechanical complexity.
