Randolph–Macon College, Liberal arts college in Ashland, Virginia.
Randolph-Macon College is a private liberal arts institution in Ashland, Virginia, with a campus featuring dozens of Renaissance Revival buildings. The grounds cover approximately 116 acres (47 hectares) with academic facilities, student residence halls, athletic complexes, and administrative structures connected by pathways and tree-lined open spaces.
The college was founded in 1830 in Boydton and moved to Ashland in 1868 after railroad connections were destroyed during the Civil War. Since relocating, it has remained in Ashland and developed into one of the oldest Methodist-affiliated educational institutions in the country.
The name honors two prominent Virginians, John Randolph and Nathaniel Macon, both early American politicians. Today students attend classes and seminars in buildings that reflect the history of the institution, while open lawns between classroom halls provide space for informal gatherings and academic discussions.
The campus sits close to downtown Ashland and is accessible by foot or car. Visitors can explore the main walkways and public outdoor areas, but should keep in mind that many buildings serve academic operations and may have restricted access.
The original Boydton site was built over a former oval horse racetrack dating to the late 1700s. This track is considered one of the earliest facilities of its kind in the United States.
