Absecon Island, Barrier island in Atlantic County, New Jersey
Absecon Island is a barrier island along the Atlantic coast in Atlantic County, New Jersey. The island extends for several miles and is home to four communities: Atlantic City, Ventnor City, Margate City, and Longport.
The island was settled by Europeans in the late 1600s after land was acquired for colonial development. This early settlement established the foundation for the communities that exist on it today.
The name comes from the Lenape word 'Absegami', reflecting the long presence of Native Americans in this region. The term refers to how the original inhabitants understood and named the local waters and landscape.
The island connects to the mainland through several bridges and offers good public transportation for visitors. The warmer months are best for visiting when the beaches are active and recreational activities are fully available.
Extensive coastal protection measures featuring engineered dune and beach systems preserve the island from erosion. These structures show the ongoing effort to defend the island against ocean forces.
