Glen Falls Bridge, Historic truss bridge in Plainfield, Connecticut
Glen Falls Bridge is an iron truss bridge that crosses the Moosup River and features a travel surface wide enough for a standard road. The structure was taken out of service and remains closed to vehicles today.
The bridge was built in 1886 and served as a major crossing over the river for more than a century before its closure in 1989. It was later recognized as a historic structure worthy of preservation.
The bridge stands near what was once a busy woolen mill, showing how this area developed as an industrial center during the 1800s. People passing through here would have connected these mills and factories to the wider world.
The bridge is closed to vehicle traffic and can only be viewed from outside. If you want to cross the river in this area, use the modern Route 14 instead.
This bridge is one of only about fifteen surviving examples of its kind still standing in Connecticut. The design was once a clever engineering solution for building strong river crossings.
