Glen Lake Children's Camp
Glen Lake Children's Camp is a facility built in 1925 in Minnetonka that was part of a larger health complex. The camp consists of simple buildings and open spaces arranged within a quiet, natural setting surrounded by woods and lakeshore.
The camp was founded in 1925 by George H. and Leonora Christian to serve children with tuberculosis, a widespread disease in Minnesota at that time. After antibiotics were discovered in the 1940s, the camp closed in 1950, while the main sanatorium buildings were torn down in 1993.
The camp reflects a time when communities prioritized children's health and used nature as part of recovery and care. The simple buildings and quiet spaces show how outdoor living and shared activities were central to childhood experiences during the early 20th century.
The camp is located in a quiet, natural setting and is easy to reach by local roads. Visitors can explore the grounds during designated times and should approach the historic buildings with respect for their age and significance.
A stone monument from 1925 honoring the founders was carefully restored in 2019, revealing its original inscriptions once again. This community restoration project shows ongoing appreciation for the camp's legacy.
