The Golconda Historic District spans 276 acres along the Ohio River, featuring nineteenth-century commercial buildings and residential structures that line the main street.
The district gained recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, marking its role in regional development since the early 1800s.
The area contains the Buel House from 1840 and a post-Civil War courthouse, representing architectural styles that defined small-town Illinois during westward expansion.
Visitors can access the district throughout the year to examine historical buildings, read information plaques, and participate in guided walking tours.
The district includes one of only three National Register sites in Pope County, alongside prehistoric settlements at Millstone Bluff and Kincaid Mounds.
