Indiana's 7th congressional district, Congressional district in Indianapolis, United States
Indiana's 7th congressional district is a voting area covering Marion County and most of Indianapolis, except for the southern part of the city. The district combines urban neighborhoods with suburban communities across its territory.
The district was established in 1833 and gained its current shape mainly in 2002, when areas from the former 10th district were added to create the new boundaries. This reshaping significantly determined the district's composition today.
The district population includes diverse communities with 45.3% White, 32.9% Black, 14.8% Hispanic, and various other ethnic groups distributed across urban and suburban areas.
Residents can check their congressional representative and register to vote through official government websites, making participation straightforward. Elections happen every two years, keeping the district's representation current with voter choices.
André Carson won the seat in 2008 and succeeded his grandmother Julia Carson, who had also served the same voting area. This grandmother-grandson representation in the same district remains an uncommon occurrence in American politics.
