McCabe Memorial Church

McCabe Memorial Church is a Methodist church building in Ponce featuring concrete walls and a wood shingle roof that stands along Hostos Avenue in the Playa district. The structure shows a solid, straightforward design that reflects the practical building methods of its era.

The building was constructed in 1908 and designed by architect Antonin Nechodoma with financial support from an affiliated bishop. Following severe hurricane damage in the late 1920s, community members and local leaders undertook its reconstruction.

The church served the local community by welcoming children of all faiths and fostering a spirit of religious inclusion. This openness shaped how residents viewed education and shared spaces in their neighborhood.

A female minister made history here in 1960 by becoming the first ordained woman of her faith in Puerto Rico. Her achievement broke a significant barrier within her religious community.
