McCabe Memorial Church
McCabe Memorial Church, Methodist church in Barrio Playa, Ponce, Puerto Rico.
McCabe Memorial Church features concrete walls and a wood shingle roof design, standing prominently on Hostos Avenue in the Playa district of Ponce.
Built in 1908 for $4,500, the church was designed by architect Antonin Nechodoma and named after Bishop Charles Cardwell McCabe who donated funds for its construction.
The church established the McCabe Memorial School in 1946, accepting children from all religious backgrounds and contributing to local education development.
The building underwent reconstruction after the San Felipe hurricane of 1928, with local residents and Catholic priest Gonzalo Noel leading restoration efforts.
Reverend Julia Torres made history at this church by becoming Puerto Rico's first ordained Methodist female minister in 1960.
