Prague Hotel, Hotel in den Vereinigten Staaten
Prague Hotel is a three-story brick building constructed in 1898 at the corner of South 13th and William Streets in Omaha. The structure contained hotel rooms, a restaurant, and a bar that served as a gathering place for the local Czech community.
The building was designed by architect Joseph Guth in 1898 and replaced a Czech dance hall built in 1869 on the same site. It remained the only hotel catering to Bohemian people in the region between Chicago and the Pacific Coast for more than 40 years.
The hotel served as a gathering place for the Czech community in Omaha, with signage and facilities that made immigrants feel at home in their new country. The tavern inside even displayed a sign in Czech welcoming women to enjoy a drink, reflecting how the space acknowledged and supported its Czech clientele.
The building is located in the Little Bohemia neighborhood on South 13th Street and is easy to access. It no longer functions as a hotel but can be viewed from the street and is included on walking tour routes and mobile apps that guide visitors through the city's history.
The building held a unique position for Bohemian travelers between Chicago and the West Coast as the only hotel specifically catering to this population across the vast region. This exceptional status made it a vital anchor for immigrant identity and community across a wide area.
