Saline County State Fish and Wildlife Area, Protected area and state park in Saline County, Illinois.
Saline County State Fish and Wildlife Area is a protected conservation area in Illinois featuring timbered hills and bottomland forest surrounding Glen O. Jones Lake. The site encompasses roughly 2,000 acres of natural habitat with a shoreline stretching several kilometers around the water.
The area was originally an important salt spring site where Native Americans produced salt until the region was ceded to the United States in 1803. The historical salt extraction sites from this early period shaped the region's economic development for generations.
The census of 1820 recorded 239 slaves and indentured servants working in salt manufacturing operations throughout the Gallatin County region.
Visitors will find nine miles of hiking trails distributed across various routes of different difficulty levels. Camping areas for tents and trailers are available with required permits, and basic facilities are located on the grounds.
The lake shoreline provides nesting habitat for wood ducks, whose populations represent an important part of the local ecosystem. These waterfowl thrive due to the deliberately created habitat conditions and undisturbed surroundings.
