USS Shark, Submarine in the United States
USS Shark was a Porpoise-class submarine that served in the Pacific during World War II. The vessel measured approximately 311 feet (95 meters) in length and could dive to depths around 1,000 feet (300 meters).
The vessel was launched in 1936 and began Pacific operations in 1941. It sank after being struck by a Japanese warship in February 1942.
USS Shark was named after the predatory fish, shark.
The wreck rests on the Pacific seafloor at significant depth. Access is limited to specialized diving expeditions or research missions.
The submarine completed multiple successful patrols and sank several enemy vessels before being attacked itself. Its record made it a notable undersea warship in the early war years.
