Upper Roxborough Historic District

Upper Roxborough Historic District spans over 100 buildings across about 711 acres, displaying different architectural styles from various time periods in the region. The collection includes railroad stations, paper mills, and homes built over many decades.

The area began as a farming community but later became shaped by railroad construction and paper mill operations that brought workers and industry to the region. This transformation created the mixed settlement pattern seen today.

The area displays different types of houses that reflect how people from different backgrounds lived side by side: small farms, worker cottages, and mansion houses for mill owners. Walking through, you see how various communities coexisted in the same neighborhood.

The area is large and requires time to explore properly, so starting with a guide or map helps you find key locations and structures. The streets are walkable, and wearing comfortable shoes is wise for extended visits.

The grounds include the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education with the 1856 Fairview building, creating an unusual blend where historical structures now serve modern conservation work. This overlap of old and new purposes gives the site an unexpected character.
