West Side Yard, Rail yard in Manhattan, United States
The West Side Yard is a rail storage facility in Manhattan located between West 30th and West 33rd Streets, where Long Island Rail Road trains are parked when not in use. The site contains 30 tracks arranged to efficiently hold multiple trains during off-peak hours.
The site was originally part of the Hudson River Railroad network and was converted into a modern storage facility in the 1980s to expand Penn Station capacity. This upgrade allowed trains to be stored closer to where they operate, rather than being sent to distant maintenance yards.
The yard integrates with the Hudson Yards development project, representing the intersection of transportation infrastructure and urban regeneration in Manhattan.
The facility sits beside the Hudson River and is easily accessible from the vicinity of Penn Station. You can observe the yard structure and train movements from surrounding streets, though entering the property itself is not permitted.
The yard was designed to operate alongside the newer Hudson Yards development project, with active train operations running beneath and beside newly built skyscrapers. This coexistence shows how modern urban development works around existing transportation infrastructure rather than replacing it.
