Matthew E. Welsh Bridge, Cantilever bridge over the Ohio River between Brandenburg, Kentucky and Mauckport, Indiana
The Matthew E. Welsh Bridge is a cantilever bridge that spans the Ohio River between Brandenburg, Kentucky and Mauckport, Indiana. Its design includes two continuous truss sections and carries traffic linking Kentucky Route 79 with Indiana Route 135 across the state border.
Construction of this bridge began in 1964 and was completed in 1966, creating a new link between Kentucky and Indiana. The project reflected growing transportation needs in the Ohio River region.
The bridge bears the name of Matthew E. Welsh, the 41st governor of Indiana, who contributed to regional transportation development point.
The bridge accommodates cars, trucks, and local traffic with standard roadway access for all vehicle types. Crossing is easier outside peak traffic hours when congestion is lighter.
Although the bridge sits mainly in Kentucky territory, Indiana holds ownership and handles its upkeep. This unusual arrangement came about through the original agreement between the two states when the crossing was planned.
