Fort Hyndshaw, Colonial fort in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, US.
Fort Hyndshaw was a wooden fortification built around the residence of Lieutenant James Hyndshaw near the Delaware River frontier in Pennsylvania. The structure consisted of a square blockhouse design that protected the household and surrounding grounds.
The fortification was established in 1756 during the French and Indian War after the Pennsylvania Legislature commissioned Benjamin Franklin and James Hamilton to build it. It served as a defensive position on the colonial frontier during a period of intense conflict.
The fort served as a military outpost where British militia forces conducted operations against Delaware tribes in northeastern Pennsylvania.
The site is marked by a historical plaque at the intersection of Milford Road and Community Drive in East Stroudsburg. Visitors can easily locate this marker on foot to see where this frontier fortification once stood.
Ground-penetrating radar surveys revealed the fortification's remains within a semicircular bluff at the edge of a ravine. The ruins are noticeably smaller than other colonial forts found in the region.
