China Clipper, Commercial flying boat in Baltimore, US
The China Clipper was a large flying boat powered by four engines, capable of carrying up to 36 day passengers or 18 overnight in sleeping berths. The aircraft was designed for extended Pacific routes between North America and Asia with refueling stops at remote islands.
The aircraft departed on its inaugural mail service from San Francisco to Manila on November 22, 1935, delivering 110,000 pieces of correspondence. This flight opened a new era of regular transpacific service between North America and Asia.
The aircraft influenced commercial aviation standards by introducing long-distance passenger services with sleeping arrangements and dedicated dining sections.
The aircraft operated regular flights with stops at Honolulu, Midway Island, Wake Island, and Guam. Travel on these routes was a demanding undertaking, with passengers spending several days in flight and landing at remote locations.
On its maiden departure the pilot flew the flying boat under the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge to avoid construction obstacles. This unusual maneuver was necessary because the bridge was newly completed and blocking the normal route.
