Schuttblume

Schuttblume is a bronze flower sculpture rising from the ground on Olympic Mountain, positioned among trees in a secluded spot. The artwork uses recycled materials and stands on a hill constructed from postwar rubble and debris.

The memorial was erected in 1972 by the trade union movement and Munich city administration to honor civilians killed in World War II air raids. It emerged during a period when the city sought to heal from war and focus on rebuilding.

The flower shape represents hope and renewal after destruction. Visitors experience it as a quiet place for reflection, where nature reinforces the artistic message.

The memorial is accessible via walking paths through Olympiapark, though it requires some wandering to locate on a side trail of the mountain. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since the location involves natural, uneven paths.

The sculpture was originally planned for the mountain peak, but debates among city planners resulted in its placement on a side slope instead. This location makes it less obvious to find, yet more intimate for those who seek it out.
