Cayo Arena

Cayo Arena is a flat coral islet surrounded by shallow turquoise waters near the coast of Monte Cristi. Coral formations beneath the surface support abundant fish populations and create distinct underwater features.

The island formed over centuries through the action of marine currents, which continue to reshape it. Its size and shape shift with seasonal water patterns, making it a dynamic natural feature rather than a static landmass.

The name comes from the Spanish word for a small island, reflecting its geographic nature. Local communities have developed a deep connection to these waters, which provide livelihood and remain central to how they relate to their surroundings.

Boat trips depart daily from nearby Punta Rucia, with snorkeling gear provided for those wanting to explore underwater. Weather conditions matter most for comfort, and the journey is relatively short.
