Rustavi Fortress

The fortress contains three distinct sets of walls with rectangular and semicircular towers stretching across the landscape of Rustavi Park.

Originally constructed in the 4th century AD when Rustavi was known as Bostan-Kalaki, the fortress served as a military outpost protecting Tbilisi from invasions.

The fortress walls display Georgian military architecture through different periods, featuring both rectangular towers from the 5th century and semicircular ones from the 9th century.

Visitors can reach the fortress by taking regular marshrutka vans from Tbilisi, which operate every 10 to 15 minutes throughout the day.

The fortress holds distinction as the only fortified structure in Georgia that contained frescoes, though these decorative elements no longer remain visible today.
