Rustavi Fortress

Rustavi Fortress is a ruin with multiple layers of walls and towers stretching across the landscape. The site has inner and outer fortifications with different tower shapes that show the various building phases of the place.

The fortress was founded in the 4th century as a military outpost to defend the region. The structures were expanded and changed over many centuries as different rulers added their own fortifications.

The fortress walls show building styles from different periods, reflecting how people here constructed defenses over time. You can observe how construction techniques changed from older to newer structures on the site.

The site can be reached by minibus from Tbilisi, which operates regularly and offers good connections. It makes sense to arrive early in the day to have enough time to explore and see the grounds in good light.

The grounds once contained frescoes and decoration, though these are no longer preserved and only archaeological traces remain. This hidden artistic history shows the site was more than just a simple military structure.
