Saint Stepanos Monastery, Armenian monastery in Jolfa, Iran
The Saint Stepanos Monastery features stone walls, seven watchtowers, and a conical dome situated among pink, red, and white stone formations near the Aras River.
Built in 649 CE, the monastery underwent several reconstructions, with major renovations during the Safavid period and final restorations completed in 1825.
The monastery serves as a gathering place for Armenian pilgrims who visit annually between July 24 and August 5 to commemorate Saint Thaddeus.
Visitors can access the monastery from 8 AM to 6 PM during summer months and 8 AM to 5 PM in winter, with different entrance fees for Iranian and international guests.
The south wall displays intricate stone carvings depicting the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, who was the first Christian martyr.
